Greece digital nomad visa 2026 requirements and tax guide

The Greece digital nomad visa has one feature that makes it stand out on an increasingly crowded map: a 50% income tax reduction for up to 7 years. Combine that with a low cost of living, Schengen access, and islands you already have as your screensaver, and it is easy to see why Greece keeps climbing nomad rankings. But 2026 brought a major change to how you apply, and getting it wrong now means starting over. Here is the full picture.

What the Greece Digital Nomad Visa Is

The Greece digital nomad visa is a residence permit introduced under Greek Law 4825/2021 for non-EU professionals who work remotely for employers or clients based outside Greece. It gives you an initial 12-month visa that converts into a 2-year residence permit, renewable in 2-year blocks. After 5 years of continuous legal residence, permanent residency becomes available. Because Greece is in the Schengen Area, the permit also gives you visa-free travel across 29 European countries.

Who Qualifies for the Greece Digital Nomad Visa

The core requirements:

1. Minimum income of 3,500 EUR per month, net. You must be a non-EU, non-EEA, and non-Swiss citizen. Family members raise the bar: add 20% for a spouse and 15% per child.

2. Six months of bank statements. As of a January 27, 2026 update, you must now show 6 consecutive months of statements at or above 3,500 EUR, up from the previous 3 months. This is the change most likely to catch out anyone who recently switched jobs or started freelancing.

3. Remote work proof. An employment contract or freelance invoices confirming income from outside Greece, plus a signed declaration that you will not work for Greek companies or serve Greek clients.

4. Health insurance, accommodation, and a clean record. Comprehensive coverage for your stay, proof of accommodation (12 months for the residence permit, 4 months minimum for the initial visa), and a police clearance certificate.

The 2026 Rule Change You Cannot Ignore

Under Law 5275/2026, Greece abolished the in-country application route. Previously you could arrive on a tourist stay and apply for the 2-year residence permit from inside Greece. That option is gone. You must now obtain a National Type D digital nomad visa from a Greek consulate or embassy in your country of origin or legal residence before you travel. The “arrive first, apply later” path is closed, and the shift has stretched processing times because everything now runs through consulates abroad. Plan for consular appointment waits when you build your timeline.

Greece Digital Nomad Visa Tax: The 50% Break Explained

Here is the headline benefit. If you move your tax residence to Greece, you can qualify for a 50% income tax reduction for up to 7 years under Greece’s inbound worker regime. In practice, you pay Greek income tax on only half of your qualifying income.

To qualify, you generally must not have been a Greek tax resident for at least 5 of the previous 6 years, you register your tax residency in Greece, and you commit to residing there for at least 2 years. Greece’s standard income tax is progressive, running from 9% up to 44% on higher earnings, so halving the base is a serious saving for anyone earning well above the minimum.

You become a Greek tax resident once you spend more than 183 days in the country in a tax year, which almost everyone actually living there will. This is not tax advice, and the regime has specific conditions, so work with a Greek tax advisor before relying on it. Where to Live in Greece

Athens. The most practical base: an international airport, the biggest nomad and coworking scene, and year-round life. Neighborhoods like Koukaki and Pangrati are popular with remote workers.

Thessaloniki. Greece’s second city, cheaper than Athens, with a strong student energy and food culture.

Crete. Big enough to live on year-round, with Chania and Heraklion offering real infrastructure alongside beaches.

The islands (Syros, Naxos, Paros). Beautiful and increasingly connected, but check off-season logistics and internet before committing to island life through winter.

Groceries, transport, and rent all run well below Western European averages, which is a large part of why nomads can live comfortably on the 3,500 EUR minimum and still save.

Greece vs Other European Options

Greece’s edge is the 50% tax reduction paired with a low cost of living, which is a combination few EU countries match. Portugal and Italy offer their own incentives but at higher living costs, while Croatia offers a full tax exemption but no residency path. Is the Greece Digital Nomad Visa Worth It?

For remote workers earning above 3,500 EUR who want a low-cost Mediterranean base with a genuine residency path and a standout tax break, Greece is one of Europe’s strongest options in 2026. Just build your plan around the new consulate-only application rule and the 6-month bank statement requirement, both of which are easy to overlook.

Rules and thresholds change, so confirm current requirements with your nearest Greek consulate before applying. Ready to see how Greece fits your profile? Take the free WhereToNomad quiz for a personalized shortlist.
