Japan digital nomad visa 2026 requirements and income

The Japan digital nomad visa is the program remote workers have wanted for a decade, and it finally launched in March 2024. It is not for everyone, though. Japan built this visa for high earners, and the income bar is one of the steepest in the world. If you clear it, you get up to 6 months living legally in one of the safest, most connected countries on earth, at a time when the weak yen makes Japan a bargain for dollar and euro earners. Here is exactly how the Japan digital nomad visa works in 2026.

What the Japan Digital Nomad Visa Is

The Japan digital nomad visa falls under the Designated Activities residence status, not a standard work visa. Launched in March 2024, it lets remote workers and freelancers from eligible countries live in Japan for up to 6 months while working for employers or clients based entirely outside Japan. You cannot work for Japanese companies or serve Japanese clients on this visa.

The big catch: it does not renew. Once your 6 months are up, you must spend 6 months outside Japan before you can reapply. It also does not lead to permanent residency or citizenship. This is a stay, not a settlement route.

Who Qualifies for the Japan Digital Nomad Visa

Two requirements do most of the filtering:

1. Annual income of at least 10 million yen (roughly $67,000 to $70,000 USD depending on the exchange rate), from non-Japanese sources. This is a personal income test based on your most recent year, not household or business revenue. It is significantly higher than most European or Latin American programs, which is why the Japan digital nomad visa is often described as a premium visa for tech, finance, and consulting professionals.

2. Nationality on the eligible list. You must be a citizen of a country or region that both has a tax treaty with Japan and qualifies for visa-exempt entry. As of 2026 that list covers around 49 to 50 countries and regions, including the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan.

On top of those, you need:

  • Private health insurance covering at least 10 million yen in medical treatment for the full stay.
  • Proof of remote work: an employment contract with a foreign company, or client contracts if self-employed.
  • A valid passport and a clean background check.

One genuine advantage over European programs: you can bring your spouse and children without proving additional income for them.

Japan Digital Nomad Visa Tax and the Weak Yen

Because the stay is capped at 6 months, most holders do not cross the 183-day threshold that triggers Japanese tax residency. If you stay 183 days or less and meet tax treaty conditions, your foreign-sourced income is generally exempt from Japanese income tax, and you are not treated as a tax resident. Always confirm your specific situation with a tax professional, especially if you combine the visa with other time in Japan.

The financial story that makes Japan compelling right now is currency. The yenโ€™s depreciation means dollar earners get substantially more purchasing power than they did a few years ago, so Tokyo, regularly ranked among the worldโ€™s most livable cities, is now cost competitive with major US cities while offering far better infrastructure. US citizens should remember they still owe the IRS regardless, so read our digital nomad taxes for US citizens guide.

How to Apply for the Japan Digital Nomad Visa

  1. Confirm eligibility. Check that your country is on the current list from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and that your income clears 10 million yen.
  2. Line up insurance. Secure private medical coverage of at least 10 million yen before applying. Our best travel insurance for digital nomads guide covers policies that meet this bar.
  3. Gather documents. Passport, proof of income (bank statements, tax returns, or contracts), proof of remote work, insurance certificate, and planned-activity documents.
  4. Apply at a Japanese mission. Submit to the embassy or consulate covering your area. Many locations now accept applications through the e-visa system. A Certificate of Eligibility (COE) is optional but speeds things up.
  5. Enter Japan. On arrival you receive Designated Activities (Digital Nomad) status. Processing typically runs from 5 business days to about 2 months.

Where to Base Yourself in Japan

Tokyo. Unmatched infrastructure, endless coworking, and a real international community. Expensive by Japanese standards but a relative bargain versus other global capitals right now.

Osaka. Cheaper than Tokyo, famous for food, and increasingly popular with nomads who want energy without the capitalโ€™s price tag.

Fukuoka. Japanโ€™s startup-friendly city, warmer weather, lower costs, and a growing remote work scene, with easy access to the rest of Asia.

Kyoto. Slower and more traditional, ideal for a shorter, culture-heavy stretch of your 6 months.

Is the Japan Digital Nomad Visa Worth It?

If you earn above 10 million yen and want a defined 6-month base in Japan, this visa is worth it: legal status, family inclusion, favorable tax treatment for short stays, and a currency environment that has not been this friendly to foreign earners in years. If your income falls below the bar or your stay is short, many nomads from visa-exempt countries simply enter as tourists, which allows remote work for your own foreign clients within the permitted period.

The eligible-country list and income rules change, so verify current requirements with Japanese immigration before you apply. Want to see how Japan compares to lower-threshold options across Asia? Take the free WhereToNomad quiz or read our best digital nomad visas in Asia guide.
